Seattle Shines a Light on Open Government
For High School Students

The Seattle Times and Seattle Post-Intelligencer Newspaper In Education Program and the Washington Coalition for Open Government produced the four page "Shining the Light on Your Government" special section that ran the Thursday before Sunshine Week.

Aimed at high school students the colorful, illustrated section included explanations of open government and related issues, why they're important, and what can be done with the information. Each page also featured a "Class Acts" assignment for discussion, writing, researching and getting out to attend public meetings with classmates.

In addition to the Seattle newspapers and the WCOG, organizations participating in the section included Allied Daily Newspapers of Washington, the Western Washington Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed, the Washington News Council, Allied Law Group, the Washington State Auditor's Office, and the Washington Policy Center.

Teachers and newspapers interested in sharing "Shining the Light on Your Government" should contact Elizabeth Duffell, NIE program specialist for the Seattle Times Co. at 206-652-6271 or eduffell@seattletimes.com for more information and permissions.
