And the Sunshine Campaign

Press & Sun-Bulletin Audit
Tests Schools on FOIL Compliance

The Press & Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton, N.Y., did a two-day Sunshine Week special report on how 10 local school districts responded to a request for contracts governing benefits and pay for teachers. "Results varied widely."

The first day's coverage, on Sunday, March 16, focused on how schools did in the audit. While some went to the "head of the class," others received "failing" grades. The report was integrated into a chalkboard graphic, and additional information was available about the state's Freedom of Information Law and how to use it, as well as suggestions for schools to make records access easier.

The next day's report used the contract information gleaned in the audit to explain some of the incentives and other perks being offered to teachers.

All of the information — including the actual contracts, how to get such records, online comments and related materials — were posted on a special Sunshine Week Web Page.
